Blue Monday

The boss sent me a mail with an interesting article about promotions yesterday,  I scrolled down through it quickly and reading on, came upon a story about "blue" Monday. I was aware of a song by New Order called Blue Monday. Later while trying to impress the boss in the elevator by mentioning that I had actually read the mail I mentioned about the song. He looked at me sadly and told me to concentrate on the promotions article and stop being distracted by silly time-wasting observations. He disdainfully explained that Blue Monday was indeed a date invented by Sky Travel presumably to kick start the holiday season or put to rest the Christmas hangover period.

Despite the bosses dismissal of the day I did a little research when I got back to my desk and found a few references to Blue Monday on the net.  The day has been nominated as the most depressing day of the year based on a mix of debt, weather, amount of time since Christmas as well as  from the following Christmas and  being about the time when people start to give up on their New Year resolutions.

Suddenly it became apparent to me that here was a glorious commercial opportunity. I had to tell the boss. The retail trade needed a  new "Day" in the commercial year.  Happy Blue Monday cards will appear. Blue Monday bouquets and chocolates will appear on the shelves and we will start to feel pressure to get a Blue Monday present for the wife/husband or girl/boyfriend. I Survived Blue Monday  t-shirts would be worn and Radio Stations would invite listeners to call in with their most depressing story (some stations already do this, these stations are well positioned to take advantage of  Blue Monday) . We could openly moan even more on Blue Monday, greet people with "Bad day to you " and part with a "You have a miserable day now sir".

But the real advantage of recognizing Blue Monday lies in the following day. People will be so happy that Blue Monday is over that the day after will be a day of celebration for all.  Perhaps another commercial opportunity there! Happy Day after Blue Monday Day. I've got to talk to the boss about this,  the commercial possibilities are endless.
