When an American president or ex- president comes to Dublin it's always a special occasion. So it was last week when Bill Clinton dropped in to give the 6th Ray Murphy Lecture on "The Future of Philanthropy in Ireland" at a special dinner in the Conrad Hotel hosted by Philanthropy Ireland and The Forum on Philanthropy. Of course he looked up his old friends Bono and Rory McIlroy while he was in town. But it was Applegreen Charitable Fund chairman Adrian Giffney who also attended the event that had the best beans to spill with the news that he had just transferred the 3rd quarterly Applegreen Charitable Fund donation for 2013 to CONSOLE . A total of €22,665- was raised. Of that total €17,823.58 came from the Applegreen -YOU BUY WE GIVE- action but in addition, site events and collection boxes have raised a further €3842.34 which shows a really superb effort from the sites responsible. And Bill Clinton? Well Bill explained to the invited guests what it would mean to the world if everybody just gave 1 per cent of their time or money to reducing poverty, and how huge an impact that would make. The proof of that pudding is clearly to be seen in the efforts of the various Applegreen site personnel who regularly give up free days and weekends to raise money to supplement the 'you buy we give' programme. Well done to you one and all.
